A group of 14 climbers have been selected to join the Mountaineering Ireland Performance Teams for 2024 - 2025.
The Youth and Senior Team programmes aim to identify, develop and support talented climbers towards success at European and World level and to achieve standards that will gain entry into the Olympic Qualifying series for future Olympic Games.
This year, we have split the programmes into several levels reflecting the actual and the future performance potential of climbers: Olympic Potential, Senior Development Team, Senior Training Team, Youth Team 1 and Youth Team 2. Climbers have been selected for the programme if it is judged they have demonstrable performance capability and capacity to be competitive at European level and work towards future success at World level and beyond.
Mountaineering Ireland High-Performance Coordinator. Jackie Newton said:
“We have been working hard in developing our Performance Strategy with a clear Climber Development Pathway, that we are looking forward to launching in the new year. A key factor will be the preparation of our Youth and Senior Team members whose progress will be supported through structured training, camps and appropriate competitions. I would like to congratulate all of those who have been selected and to let them know how much we are looking forward to working with them.
We had many applications and have selected seven for the Youth Team and seven for the Senior Team, with the aim of focusing optimum levels of resources and competition, at the right time and in the right place. For those climbers who have not made the programme this time, we are putting deeper levels of support and a more comprehensive offer in place in the Youth Squad, which will include climbers in the U19 age group this year. For those older, we will continue to look at how we support and guide and will continue to observe their progress, keeping the door open for future inclusion.
I would like to thank those climbers who have represented Ireland in 2024. Your presence both on the Team and in international competitions has added to our history and given us a strong foundation on which to build for the future.”
