European Youth Championships Selection Announcement

The Mountaineering Ireland team for the European Youth Climbing Championships has been announced.

Many congratulations to the following athletes who have been selected to represent Ireland at the European Youth Championships to be hosted in Troyes, France between 25th – 29th September 2024.

Youth B – Oscar Lenehan

Youth A – Sean Henchion

Junior Men – Caelan Lenehan; Tom Nickels

Junior Women – Ciara Lawler; Amy Rafferty

Mountaineering Ireland have been invited to enter a team into this event to compete against the other European Nations in boulder and lead climbing. Members of the current Youth Team have been selected for this event including Sean Henchion who will compete in the lead competition in Youth A. Sean has competed well in the European Youth Cup series this summer and been tantalizingly close to making the finals in the last two lead competitions. He will be joined by Oscar Lenahan in Youth B and Caelan Lenahan, Tom Nickels Ciara Lawler and Amy Rafferty in the junior categories.

Jackie Newton, High-Performance Coordinator said, “This European Championship will provide our team with valuable competition at an event that features some of the world’s best youth and junior athletes. The fields will be deep and competitive as each county select their best climbers. We have picked athletes that are on the developmental pathway and will hold their own in this competition. It will give them the opportunity to finish their international climbing season on a high note. It is also an opportunity to compete in a brand-new climbing arena that will provide challenge on the wall as well as against the other teams.”

Some members of the team including Sean Henchion, Caelan Lenehan and Oscar Lenehan will be seen in action together prior to this championship at the European Cup in Ostermundigen, Switzerland on 21st and 22nd September.
