Mountaineering Ireland have published the 2025 Selection Overview and Selection Policies for Senior World Cup Ice Climbing and Indoor Senior European Cups, Youth European Cups, Youth European Championships, Youth World Championships and Senior World Cups.

The Selection Overview provides information on the purpose and targets of the event for Mountaineering Ireland, disciplines and team size.

The selection policies provide lists of the events that Mountaineering Ireland intend to enter climbers into, the selection process, panel, timeframe and criteria with any test events or competitions that will be taken into consideration.

Conversations have already taken place between Mountaineering Ireland and Ice Climbers who have shown potential for World Cup events. Details of entries will be published prior to the first competition in South Korea on 10th – 12th January

For Indoor Climbing Cup events (Senior and Youth European and World), there will be two rounds during the selection process. Round 1 will consider climbers in the Senior Olympic Potential and/or Youth Tier 1 programmes. Round 2 will consider climbers who satisfy the criteria. In both rounds, selection is contingent on a climber’s injury and health status ensuring they are fit to compete. The Head Coach will be the selector for these competitions with other panel members providing advice.

For Championship events, there will be only one round that will consider all climbers who satisfy the criteria. For these events, there will be a selection panel of at least four experts including the Head Coach.

“For 2025, we have changed the selection process, for Indoor Climbing, from a system where Youth and Senior Team members nominated themselves for their planned competitions to one where the Head Coach and climber will agree the relevance of the competition for the climber’s development and where the selection panel are satisfied that the criteria has been fulfilled. We are looking forward to taking strong and competitive teams to the 2025 competitions that fit with the philosophy of the Team programmes.

“Our long-term goal is to build climbers towards Olympic qualification and it is with that in mind that we have planned the competition programme and criteria. This competition programme will support climbers with a clear championship performance focus for 2025 whilst also developing climbers on the right trajectory for future world and Olympic success, fulfilling the objectives of the Youth and Senior Team Programmes”
