County Outdoor Recreation Plans

24 November 2024

The process of developing County Outdoor Recreation Plans is now commencing in many counties.

The development of County Outdoor Recreation Plans, a process that is now commencing in many counties, has been prompted by the publication of Embracing Ireland’s Outdoors, Ireland’s National Outdoor Recreation Strategy.

These new county plans should ensure that investment in outdoor recreation is strategic and aligned with local needs. Mountaineering Ireland is encouraging and supporting its clubs and members to participate in the public consultation to help shape these plans.

Your knowledge of hiking and climbing can really add value to the plan for the county where you live, or counties where you regularly hike or climb.

Mountaineering Ireland will shortly publish a county-by-county update on the development of County Outdoor Recreation Plans on this page, along with further guidance for members. As we become aware of consultation opportunities, we will share these on Mountaineering Ireland’s social media, through our monthly e-newsletter and with clubs in the area.

For more information about how Mountaineering Ireland members can input to new County Outdoor Recreation Plans, and why they should, you can read Access and Conservation Officer Helen Lawless's recent article in the Irish Mountain Log, and another recent article by Brian Kennan, Char of Mountaineering Ireland's Hillwalking Committee.
