Love Your Landscape - Mourne geodiversity walk

Date: 28/9/2018
Venue: Tollymore Mountain Centre

Love Your Landscape - A geodiversity awareness walk with Dr Kirstin Lemon

This event will start with an introductory talk at Tollymore Mountain Centre, followed by a geologically focused walk up Bearnagh with Dr Kirstin Lemon from the Geological Survey NI.

The walk will take us up along the Trassey River where you can see the boundary between deep ocean sediments from 400 million years ago, and the famous Mourne Granite that was emplaced around 55 million years ago. The two different rocks types tell a tale of two oceans; one that has long since disappeared and one that is only in its infancy. We will make our way up through Hare's Gap, evidence of the area's icy past before crossing the Mourne Wall and making our way up to the peak of Slieve Bearnagh. From the tor-topped peak you'll have views across to Dundrum and to Kilkeel, taking in the reservoirs Ben Crom, Silent Valley and Spelga Dam. We'll make our way down the other side of Slieve Bearnagh and on the way see evidence of the Mourne mountains quarry industry that has provided stone for many famous monuments around the world.

Dr Kirstin Lemon looks after the Information and Infrastructure Team at the Geological Survey of Northern Ireland, and has a specific role in helping the public to understand the amazing diversity of rocks and landscapes that Northern Ireland has. Kirstin works with numerous organisations locally, nationally and internationally to help develop and maintain UNESCO Global Geoparks as a tool for sustainable tourism, conservation and education.

This event is hosted by Mountaineering Ireland in association with Geological Survey Northern Ireland and Tollymore Mountain Centre.

The Love your Landscape day is free of charge, however places are limited, to reserve a place email   Preference will be given to representatives from clubs that are active in the Mournes, to training providers, hike leaders and others in a position to share this knowledge with others. As we want as many clubs as possible to benefit from this opportunity, places will initially be limited to one per club.
