Mountaineering Ireland have been successful in their application of securing €74,231 through the Sports Capital Programme 2020 from the Department of Sport to purchase relevant hillwalking and climbing equipment. Commenting on the announcement, Mountaineering Ireland’s CEO, Murrough McDonagh said “This is very much welcome news for Mountaineering Ireland, as it will help us purchase key equipment to delivers our services and events to our members. I would like to thank the Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin TD, the Minister of State for Sport and the Gaeltacht, Jack Chambers TD and the Department of Sport for their support and commitment to the sector. This initiative was delivered by the staff team, and led by Damien O’Sullivan, our Climbing Officer, who also delivered an online information night to our members in offering tailored support on how to apply for the funding. Some of our clubs and other stakeholders within the sport sector were also successful in their application securing an additional €90,000 of Sports Capital Funding for outdoor equipment. To see the Government announce close to €165,000 in funding towards our sector for equipment is very much welcome news.”
