Title:  The Tragic loss of Rescue 116
Date:  15/03/2017

On Behalf of the Board, Staff and Membership of Mountaineering Ireland, I would like to extend our deepest condolences to the Family of Captain Dara Fitzpatrick. Our thoughts at this time are also with the families of the missing crew members; Captain Mark Duffy, Winchman Ciarán Smith and Winch Operator Paul Ormsby. We are also thinking about all their colleagues in the Irish Coast Guard, the Naval Service, the Air Corps, An Garda Síochána Sub-Aqua Unit and the local fishing community at this difficult time.

The Crew of 116 and their colleagues in the service have often come to the aid of the walking and climbing community who have found themselves in difficulty. We acknowledge the selfless dedication of the crew of 116 and their colleagues who place themselves in harm’s way to save others in times of distress.

Yesterday morning’s tragedy is a profound reminder of the risk and the bravery of these crews.
