Mountaineering Ireland welcomes the statement by Minister for Agriculture, Simon Covney TD this afternoon, Wednesday, 19 June 2013, that Coillte's harvesting rights will not be sold.

Mountaineering Ireland would like to thank the huge number of members that campaigned for this outcome. Mountaineering Ireland would also like to thank all the fellow members of the Save Our Forests campaign, especially IMPACT and the Irish Timber Council and others.

The Minister also highlighted plans to merge Coillte and Bord na Mona. Mountaineering Ireland wants the Minister to ensure that recreational users can make a positive contribution to these restructuring plans. In that context Mountaineering Ireland wants to see recreation a core priority in the new Bio Energy Ireland.

The Coillte campaign has highlighted the fragility of access to state owned lands. Mountaineering Ireland will now work to secure a right of public access to publicly owned lands.
