Indoor Climbing

Indoor climbing walls provide an ideal environment for young people experience climbing in a safe and fun environment.

Indoor climbing walls provide year round weather proof vertical play-ground in which young people can develop their climbing skills and techniques.

Regular route-setting keeps the climbing challenges fresh for even the most avid young climber. Climbing walls are also very social environments in which climbers of all ages support and encourage each other's development.

Many climbing wall offer instructional and coaching classes for young climbers who like to learn in a more structured manner.

NICAS is the National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme, NIBAS is the National Indoor Bouldering Award Scheme.

NICAS and NIBAS have been developed by and are administered by the Association of British Climbing Walls Training Trust. Mountaineering Ireland supports and endorses NICAS and NIBAS.

These two schemes are designed to promote climbing development and accred individual achievement on indoor climbing walls. The schemes can be used as a starting point for people wishing to take up climbing. The schemes are open to all climbers aged from seven years of age. 

NICAS and NIBAS well established and widely available in England, Scotland and Wales. In Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland the schemes are less widely available. As more young people begin to climb more climbing walls are beginning to offer these excellent schemes.
