Title:  Autumn Gathering, October 12 – 14, 2018

An important event in the world of mountaineering and hillwalking will take place in the Fairhill Hotel, Clonbur, Co Galway on October 12 – 14th when Galway Walking Club hosts the annual Mountaineering Ireland Autumn Gathering. During this three day gathering, walking clubs and individual members from all over Ireland will participate in hillwalking in the surrounding Maum Turks, the Twelve Bens and the Partry Mountains guided by Galway Walking Club leaders. A host of walks offering varying levels and duration will start on Saturday October 13th. Workshops on other issues will take place each day of the weekend.

An integral part of this Gathering is the opportunity for participants to discuss the role that access and outdoor recreation can play in the future of Ireland’s mountain areas. Minister of State for Rural Affairs and Natural Resources, Seán Kyne, Éamon O Cuiv, TD Galway West, Trish Walsh, Director of Petersburg Outdoor Education Centre will form the panel discussion while Lorna Siggins, journalist and author, will chair this event. Galway Walking Club was founded in 1995. In 2018, with increasing membership numbers and a wider range of age and fitness levels, Galway Walking Club offers five different walk options in a variety of landscapes in three counties, Galway, Mayo and Clare; three levels of hill walks, Rambles, and a short Sunday afternoon walk. Galway Walking Club has also been running an annual Connemara Walking Marathon since 1996. The Club now has a membership of over 300. See for further details of this club.

Mountaineering Ireland exists to represent and support hillwalking and climbing clubs throughout Ireland. Among others, it aims to promote mountain training and skills development, to promote responsible participation in all aspects of mountaineering and to strive for improved and assured access for responsible hillwalkers and climbers and has links to national and European sports organisations.
