Title: Galtee Path Study Consultation
Type:
Date: 12/10/15
System Date: 12/10/2015

Looking after the paths on the Galtees

Concern at the impact of increased footfall on the Galtee Mountains, particularly around Galtymore, has prompted a study of the paths on the mountains. South Tipperary Development Company has appointed Walking the Talk, a small Scottish-based company with experience in recreation management and upland path work, to assess the condition of the paths on the Galtee Mountains and to provide details on what action is needed to prevent further path erosion.

Chris York from the Walking the Talk is conducting survey work on the Galtees early in October. As part of this, a consultation with walkers and climbers will take place in Cahir on Monday 12th October.  The meeting will start at 7.30pm sharp in the offices of South Tipperary Development Company, Unit 2C Carrigeen Commercial Park, Clogheen Road, Cahir, Co. Tipperary.

Mountaineering Ireland is strongly encouraging clubs and individual members who regularly use the Galtees to participate in this consultation. This study provides an opportunity to combine good advice on how best to care for the Galtees with the views of those who know the mountains well. Those who are unable to attend the event on 12th October can make their views known by sending an email to galtees@walking-the-talk.co.uk before Monday 12th October, or by phoning Chris York on 089 9588942.

As part of the study, landowners will be provided with an opportunity to express their views on recreation in the Galtee Mountains and meetings specifically for landowners are being held in Burncourt and Bansha. This study has been commissioned by South Tipperary Development Company with funding from the Department of Environment, Community & Local Government.
