System Date: 30/06/2014
'Mind your footing Minister, we can risk losing a Councillor, a Senator, even a TD but to lose a Minister might be bad PR!', came the roar from behind as Minister Jimmy Deenihan scrambled across the the Beenkeeragh Ridge - 'good PR, you mean' shouted another!
On Sunday, 29th June Mountaineering Ireland hosted Oireachtas' members and staff to a day in the MacGillycuddy Reeks. This is an annual event organised by Minister Jimmy Deenihan TD, Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD and Eric Byrne TD. The event had approximately 50 participants spread across 6 routes of varying challenge from the Coumloghra Horseshoe to a route over the Eastern Reeks.
With the event taking place in the MacGillycuddy Reeks, Mountaineering Ireland, on behalf of the organisers, submitted the the new event application form to the now established MacGillycuddy Reeks Mountain Access Forum (via the Rural Recreation Officer for Kerry). Local Mountaineering Ireland clubs Killarney Mountaineering Club, Kenmare Walking Club, Laune Mountaineering Club and Tralee Mountaineering Club all gave great support to the event and animated the mountains, especially for those who were in the Reeks for the first time.
Beaufort Community Centre and Cronin's Yard provided the refreshments for the day and everyone would like to thank them and the landowners of the Reeks for the wonderful welcome and hospitality received by one and all.
