British Bouldering Championships
System Date: 24/06/2014
Six climbers made the journey the Sheffield to compete at the 2014 British Bouldering Championships. Dom Burns who placed 6th at the 2013 British Bouldering Championships was looking to improve his placing in what was going to be a very competitive field. Joining Dom was Jono Redmond, Daragh O Connor, Eoin Acton, Jamie Rakin and David Fitzgerald.
For the qualifying round the competitors are given four boulder problems with five minutes to attempt each problem. The top twenty climbers progressed to the semi-final, among this group were Dom Burns, Daragh O Connor and Jono Redmond. Terry O Connor was there to coach, support and help the climbers do their very best at the competition.
The semi-final follows a similar format to the qualifying round, but there was a noticeable increase in the difficulty of the problems. Dom climbed smoothly and strongly to progress to the final round in third place. Jono climbed the tricky slab first problem on his first attempt and put in a brain-bursting effort on the second problem to get to the top before the five minute buzzer sounded. Jono missed out on the final by just one place, just one attempt to reach a bonus hold.
In the final round Dom again looked strong. Due to the warm and humid conditions at the competitions many climbers were having issues with the vital skin on their fingertips. As Dom moved on the last two problems of the final round his fingertips began to wear out making each problem even more difficult. By the end of the final Dom had done enough to secure himself 4th place overall, an improvement of two place from last year.
