Title: New Fence near the Gap of Dunloe
Date: 30/04/2014
System Date: 17/04/2014

A substantial sheep fence recently erected on the broad ridge between Strickeen and Cnoc an Bhráca in the MacGillycuddy Reeks is causing frustration for walkers. The fence is difficult to cross and in mist it is not obvious that it can be by-passed. To avoid crossing the fence follow the guidance below:
• If approaching from the Gap of Dunloe via the Zig-Zags, travel southwards with the new fence on your left. This will bring you up onto the north-eastern spur of Cnoc an Bhráca where you can re-join the normal route to the summit.
• If descending from Cnoc an Bhráca follow the usual route down until you meet the new fence. Keep the fence on your right for approximately 2km; the fence will turn to the right in the saddle before Strickeen.

This fence is shown as a black line on the new Ordnance Survey 1:25k map of the MacGillycuddy Reeks. The recommended route has been marked in red on the map below. Mountaineering Ireland understands that the fence was an unauthorised development and that it is currently going through the planning process.
