Rural Development Programme submission
System Date: 27/02/2014
Ireland’s uplands are one of our most important natural assets, which we have a duty to protect for future generations. The labour intensive nature of farming in upland areas, combined with the low rate of return, is leading to land abandonment, with consequent decline in the quality of the environment. With most of the uplands being privately owned land, the most cost-effective way to look after the upland environment is by linking farm payments to environmental outputs.
Over the last two years Mountaineering Ireland has worked in co-operation with other groups to develop proposals to support continuity in hillfarming under the Rural Development Programme 2014-2020.
