Junior Irish Bouldering Championships

Taking place at the Gravity Climbing Centre on Saturday 15th if February, the  Junior Irish Bouldering Championship attracted some of the top young climbers from all over Ireland as well as some strong competitors from Scotland.

The competition was open to all young climbers born between 1995 and 2002. The Junior Irish Bouldering Championship (JIBC) followed International Federation of Sports Climbing’s format for youth bouldering competitions.

The qualification round consisted of eight boulder problems with a maximum of five attempts per problem. Competitors are scored on the number of ‘tops’ and ‘bonuses’ reached,  as well as the number of attempts taken to reach the holds. The winning climber is the one who achieves the highest number of ‘tops’ in the lowest number of attempts.

Six climbers from each of the competition categories progressed to the final round. In the final round the competitors have three boulder problems to climb. Competitors have an unlimited number of attempts within four minutes on each of the three problems.

Route setters Rob Napier and Juan O Raw worked for two days to set the competition. The final problems were set and tested on Thursday, before being taken off Gravity’s competition wall to be put into storage for the final round on Saturday. The qualification round of 20 problems was set and tested on the Friday.
The qualification round ran from 10:00 to 12:00 competitors found the problems challenging both in terms of style and difficulty. As soon as the qualifying round was finished the route setters began stripping the competition wall of the qualification routes and resetting the final routes. The results from the qualification round were tallied up. The top six climbers from each category progressed to the final round.

The final round was held in two groups, with the younger competitors in Youth B and C climbing first. In Male Youth B Carson Carnduff was the only climber in the category to reach the top of all three problems and in doing so he clinched the title from Saul Calvert and Philip Murphy. In Female Youth B Ellen Griffin and Kirsten Taylor from Scotland reached the top of their three final climbs on their first attempt. Ellen and Kirsten could not be separated by counting their results from the qualifying round so a Super-Final round was needed. In the Super-Final both Ellen and Kirsten reached the bonus hold on their first attempt, neither of the reached the top, but Kirsten progressed further on the problem to take first place. In Youth C Female Yasmin Murphy showed amazing sportsmanship as she threw herself whole heartedly at her final problems despite being the only competitor in her category. In the Male Youth C final David Neassens turned on the turbo and blasted his way to victory ahead of Filip Przybylski and Daragh Hoare.

The second group of finalists put on an amazing show for the assembled crowd. Female Youth A and Female Junior climbers Victoria Waterson and Vanessa woods battled their imaginary opponents with fine displays and strength and skill taking the titles for their category. In Male Youth A Jamie Rankin and William Bosi were separated by a only a single attempt. It was however Male Youth A winner Dominic Burns whose display of nerve, strength and technique left the spectators slack jawed. Dominic reached the top of all three final problems taking only four attempts to do so. Ciaran Scanlon upped his performance for the final round taking first from Daragh O Connor and Eoin Acton.

A huge amount of support was given by Ricky, Angela and the rest of the team at Gravity. Setters Rob Napier and Juan O Raw put in a massive effort to set a range of excellent problems. Without the help of all the people who judged: Terence Hoare; Kathleen Murphy; Hazel Lawrence; Katrina Armstrong; John Taylor; Marek Przybylski; Paul Naessens; Jeanne Rankin; Angela Carlin and Matthew Dignam. Thanks also to Liam Anderson for providing music, John Murphy for taking video and Marek Przybylski for photographing.
