System Date: 15/01/2014
Eimir Mc Swiggan who is currently living in South Korea competed at the first round of the UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup. The opening round of the 2014 championship took place in Cheongsong in South Korea.
Eimir is originally from Gortin in county Tyrone but has been living in South Korea for the past number of years where she works as a teacher of English. Eimir’s initial experience of World-Cup ice-climbing came in 2013. Placing a very respectable 25th at this competition Eimir was encouraged to train hard and prepare more toughly for the 2014 competition.
Following a gruelling season of training Eimir felt she was strong from for the 2014 competition. Eimir’s goal for the competition was to reach the semi-final, a significant step up from her previous result. Not only did Eimir achieve her goal of reaching the semi-finals but she qualified into the finals in 7th place after the preliminary round. In the final round Eimir finished in 13th place overall.
In her own words, “I came 7th in the preliminaries and came 13th in the semifinals. To be honest I was happy with my climbs. I think I did as best as I possibly could have. I made it 3 meters from the top in the semifinal and ran out of time. I was just about out of steam anyway!”
A full report of Eimir's experience at the recent Ice Climbing World Cup and with climbing in Korea in general will be printed in the next edition of the Irish Mountain Log.
