Oireachtas NI Assembly Walk
Title: Mountaineering Ireland hosts members and staff of the Oireachtas & Northern Ireland Assembly

On Sunday, 30 June Mountaineering Ireland hosted a charity walk in the Mourne Mountains for members, political staff and friends of the Houses of the Oireachtas and the Northern Ireland Assembly.

Following introductory remarks by Dawson Stelfox, Minister Jimmy Deenihan TD noted that this was the first time the annual Oireachtas hillwalk had taken place in the Mournes and welcomed his colleagues from the Northern Ireland Assembly. Westminster MP Margaret Ritchie in turn welcomed all to the Mourne Mountains and representatives from the nominated life charity, the Rett Syndrome Association of Ireland, gave an insight into how this rare neurodevelopmental disorder affects children, predominantly girls.

In damp and breezy conditions, the participants completed a choice of four walks over and through the Mourne Mountains. Amongst the walkers was the most recently elected member of the Oireachtas, Helen McEntee TD and Conall McDevitt MLA, who deserves a mention for his race down Slieve Donard. Overall this was a very positive event and plans are already underway for 2014, with the south west in mind.

Mountaineering Ireland would especially like to acknowledge the huge support from local clubs the Spartan Red Sox, Belfast Association of Rockclimbers and Fellrunners (BARF) and the Blayney Ramblers. Thanks also go to the other Mountaineering Ireland volunteers who supported the event and to Tollymore National Outdoor Centre for facilities, catering and transport.
