YCS Round Report - UCD

5 March 2013

Over sixty young climbers took part in the Youth Climbing Series Republic of Ireland region second round. The competition was held at the University College Dublin climbing wall on Saturday 2nd of March.

The day began with a briefing for chaperones and belayers by chief organiser Damien O' Sullivan. This was followed by a briefing by head judge Terry O' Connor for the ten judges. Darragh O' Connor, usually a Boys A competitor was forced by injury to swop his competitors vest for a volunteers t-shirt for the day. Darragh got the day off to a great start for the competitors by leading the group warm up. Head judge Terry O' Connor then briefed the competitors on the rules of the competition to ensure everyone understood what they could and could not do.

Climbing began at eleven a.m. The boys began by competing on their three boulder problems, the girls opened with the routes. Each route and boulder problem was demonstrated for the competitors by the demonstrators Ciaran Scanlon and Mathew Dignam.

Fantastic performances were put in by competitors across all categories. The very high standard of climbing necessitated the route setter to move competitors to more difficult routes and boulder problems to separate the leaders. In many of the categories only one or two holds separated the competitors across the top positions.

Due to the highly efficient team of volunteers there were very few delays during the competition and the majority of climbers had completed their three boulder problems and three routes by three p.m.

Thanks to the generosity of the sponsors; Great Outdoors, Gravity climbing center, Awesome Walls climbing center and Hillwalkers, €600 worth of prizes was given out between the top three competitors in each of the ten categories.

Congratulations to all the climbers who took part full results of the competition are available
