Proposals to support management of the uplands

Following a workshop hosted by Mountaineering Ireland in October, a National Uplands Working Group was formed to develop proposals to support the sustainable management of upland areas under the next Rural Development Programme. The proposals from the group will probably centre on a targeted agri-environment programme for the uplands. As nearly all hill land is privately owned, either by individuals or jointly owned as commonage land, the most practical and cost-effective way to look after these areas into the future is likely to be in co-operation with the people who own and work the land. An initial outline of the proposals and the terms of reference for the Working Group are available here.
