EastWest Mapping new digital map - Dublin & Wicklow Mountains

5 April 2012

EastWest Mapping has a new digital map solution for their detailed mapping of the Dublin & Wicklow Mountains. This is in the form of an SD card for the Satmap Active10 GPS unit. Eastwest Mapping did look at a range of other platforms and we are happy that the Satmap system is durable and works well in typical hill walking conditions where it might need to be used when things get difficult.

Barry Dalby, Eastwest Mapping said, “It is important to acknowledge that this type of GPS map product is not to everybody's taste. Many people go to the hills to escape the trappings of modern living, including electronic gadgetry and for these people a paper map, if that, is all they require. I myself taught hill navigation for several years using traditional paper map, compass and distance measuring skills. But I would have no doubt that a good map running on a good GPS unit revolutionises ordinary hill navigation. The facility to have your position constantly updated on a map as you move along is a 'game changer' as they say”. He added, “It is important to note that map reading & route finding skills are still required but compass and distance measurement calculations are obviated. However electronic gadgets, no matter how well built, can fail/ run out of battery power etc., so there is still a need to carry a backup map & compass and know how to use them in emergency”.

The Dublin & Wicklow Mountains Satmap SD card runs on the Satmap Active10 GPS unit. It does not run on any other GPS device. The mapping contains three layers a) a general base map layer b) a simplified version of our mapping at a nominal scale of 1:50,000 and c) a detailed version of our mapping at a nominal scale of 1:25,000. There is also an inbuilt copy of the SRTM digital terrain data to assist in route planning. The three maps can merge seamlessly from one to another as the user zooms in or out. The purpose of the 1:50,000 data is to enable a wider view of an area to assist with route planning. The 1:50,000 and 1:25,000 maps both use a 10 metre contour interval. More detail on both the map product and GPS unit can be found at www.eastwestmapping.ie. Click on 'Order Maps'.

Apart from this detail mapping of Dublin & Wicklow, the Active10 GPS will also run the standard OSI 1:50,000 mapping, which is sold separately on a different card.

The Dublin & Wicklow Mountains Satmap SD card is only available from www.eastwestmapping.ie in Ireland. It costs €50.00 inc VAT at 23% and postage. We are also offering a 'bundle package' of Active10 GPS unit plus Dublin & Wicklow Mountains Satmap SD card for €360.00 inc VAT at 23% and postage.
