Ballyhoura Climbing Project news update

28 March 2012
Neal McQuaid, Talent Development Officer, visited Kilfinane OEC on Wednesday evening to see the amazing progress that is being made at the newly formed (less than two months old) club. (for more information, see here for a report on their opening night, and their opening hours, etc)

With almost 30 young participants already, the 10 instructors currently undergoing induction and training are being kept very busy in teaching and training the children in their introduction to rock climbing. While there, I set some challenging problems for the children to try and to practice new techniques on and it was inspiring to see the enthusiasm that was demonstrated by all as they did their best to complete the challenges. And all with a lot of laughs!

Afterwards, I spent some time working with the instructors to give some additional guidance on methods to teach technique to the children and activities to introduce new ideas to them. This was finished off with some coaching work with the instructors themselves to help improve their own climbing.

In all, I had a great evening and looking forward to seeing the club go from strength to strength. Good luck to the instructors who are getting assessed next week!
