Aspirants Weekend - A Success!!

Last weekend 18 eager students joined MI's Youth Development Officer, Paul Swail and MI volunteer's Eddie Hawkins and Eamon Quinn for a weekend of safe mountain skills in the Mourne Mountains. The weekend started at the Queens Hut, Mournes on Friday evening. Once everyone had found the cottage (first navigation test passed!) we had a quick workshop on packing a rucksack and what equipment to take on the hill.

The aim for the weekend was to introduce the skills needed to be safe and confident in the Irish mountains. The weather didn't let us down, it was windy, cold and we had a fair bit of rain! These weather conditions provide a great environment to look at navigation, group safety and the need for proper equipment (mostly waterproofs!).

The weekend was a huge success and thanks to all the students who attended! A special mention has to go to UCC who drove up for the weekend. Judging from the feedback it was well worth the drive.

I now have the pleasure of taking 8 of these students over to Scotland for a winter skills trip next month.
