Press Release from Mountain Meitheal South East

"Take only photos, leave only footprints" is not just good enough anymore.

In recent years there has been a huge increase in the number of people taking to the hills and mountains here in the south east of Ireland, to enjoy the fresh air, the scenery, the solitude and the challenge offered by our mountains, forests and wild places. While this is to be welcomed, it is increasing the pressures on these landscapes. The result is that many of our trails and mountains are showing the impact of this increased recreation use.

If you’re interested in the mountain environment here in the south east of Ireland and want to help protect it for the coming generations, then this might just be for YOU. We require volunteers from many different backgrounds skills and interests. A new branch of "Mountain Meitheal" that has been repairing trails in the Dublin and Wicklow mountains for the last ten years has just been set up here in the south east. "MOUNTAIN MEITHEAL SOUTH EAST" is now looking to recruit new members to repair, maintain and spread an awareness of sustainable recreation on our mountains and hills.

Working with landowners, community groups and statutory bodies, we hope to stop the erosion and reverse environmental damage on the mountains we all love, it may take a long time but we have to make a start, that time is NOW.

If you’re interested in what we want to do, please come along to an information walk and talk on the 25th of November, start time 10.30am, start location is the car park in Glen Cush Boreen in the Glen of Aherlow. On the day you will meet people from Mountain Meitheal who will explain the objectives of the new branch.
