MI meets New ERA and Dept. of Agriculture on Coillte

3 September 2012

Mountaineering Ireland met with the Department of Agriculture and New ERA officials on Wednesday, 29 August in Agriculture House.

The Department officials said that the aim is to preserve the benefits of state assets, but bring in money early; as far as possible to achieve the best of both worlds. The Department officials stressed that the “Taoiseach Enda Kenny and four Ministers, including Minister Simon Coveney, and have given assurances that the land will not be sold”.

Mountaineering Ireland raised serious concerns regarding any change to public ownership of Coillte’s assets and, critically, the protection of the open access policy to the entire Coillte estate. The important role that the Coillte estate plays in providing informal routes onto the higher mountains of Ireland is critical to recreational users.

Mountaineering Ireland also voiced concerns and said it was wrong to simply highlight the need to protect the forest parks and recreation sites stating that all the Coillte estate has recreational value.
