OSi to replace any faulty Sheet 68 maps

17 July 2012

Tullow Mountaineering Club & South Eastern Mountain Rescue Association have alerted Mountaineering Ireland to a major problem on the Ordnance Survey Ireland (OSi) map, Sheet 68 (Blackstairs mountains).

Paddy Looney, Tullow Mountaineering Club & South Eastern Mountain Rescue Association advised that; “there are no grid lines on the sheet and anyone navigating or trying to determine location and give grid reference will be greatly tested” and suggest that the maps should be withdrawn from sale.

It is the third edition (2006) of Sheet 68 that is affected. Tullow Mountaineering Club was delivering navigation training for new members and when going through the basics of giving a grid reference it emerged that those with newer maps had eastings and northings but no grid lines.

Mountaineering Ireland has requested OSi to withdraw any remaining stock of these maps as they would make it extremely difficult for people to navigate on the hills in poor conditions. Mountaineering Ireland has also asked for confirmation of when the new edition of this sheet will be published.

OSi has quickly repsonded stating, "There was a printing error. We have raised a Purchase Order for the printing of a fresh supply. We expect delivery in August. It will be difficult to get a full re-call in place however we will gladly replace the map with a new one if people return the old map to us. Thanks for informing us."
