Glen River site visit

Mountaineering Ireland visited the path work that has been completed by Mourne Heritage Trust (MHT) in the Glen River, Mourne Mountains on Wednesday, 13 June.

Mountaineering Ireland (MI) was represented by Ross Millar (Chairperson), Karl Boyle and Helen Lawless. MI requested the site visit to voice concerns on the impact recent periods of heavy rain has had on the new path and address the type of intervention applied.

MHT advised that learning from elsewhere (e.g. Cairngorms) was applied in addition to their own experiences to provide a sustainable solution. They stressed that once the path 'beds in' and the landscaping is complete the path will prove itself.

MI recognises the need to manage erosion in the uplands and apply appropriate interventions and MI will host an all island conference, Helping the Hills*, on 13/14 September in Glendalough Hotel to address the management of erosion in the uplands.

Helping the Hills will bring together a number of speakers from Britain and Ireland to share lessons from their experience in recreation and erosion management. The event will also include site visits to look at erosion and path work that has been carried out in the Wicklow Mountains by Mountain Meitheal, Coillte and/or NPWS.
